How to Make Wire Wrapped Studs

These studs are incredible easy to make. All you need is wire, gemstones, some pliers, earring backs and a tape measure. Please excuse my fingernails in these photos... I do love gardening. If you prefer a video guide, you can find a video guide click here.

I prefer irregular gemstones, as they have a great boho vibe to match the style of these earrings.
I have used 0.8mm (20 gauge) wire for these earrings, but if you prefer more dainty, you can use 0.6mm wire (22 gauge). It needs to be soft so that you can easily bend it into shape. I don't recommend aluminium wire, while it is super soft, it does not hold its form, so will be bent out of shape very easily. Soft copper wire or plated soft copper wire is affordable and easy to use, but copper can leave a green tint on your skin and can cause allergies. Annealed 925 silver wire is a similar to work with as copper, but is more pricy. I also use stainless steel as it is hypoallergenic, does not tarnish, holds its form well, but it fairly hard, making it difficult to work with.
It is worth practicing with soft wire before moving onto trickier firm wire.
To start making your earrings, cut two 8cm lengths of wire, as seen in the photos.
Thread a gemstone onto the wire leaving about 12-14mm of overhang.

Holding the Gemstone securely, wrap the long end of the wire around the gemstone, as seen here:

Once the wire wraps around the gemstone once or twice, it's time to wrap the earring back.
Position the wire at 90 degree to the earring, then using pliers wrap the end of the wire around the earring post.

Squeeze the end of the wire tightly into the earring back to reduce and catchy ends. You can also sand down any sharp ends. Then add silicone backs to complete your earrings.

All done. I hope you find this an easy to follow guide. Happy crafting!
